Insurance

Some of my clients get “loading charges” due to overweight, or obesity.

What is obesity all about?

How do you defined it?

Obesity is a metabolic condition due to regular dietary energy (calories) intake exceeding energy used in physical activity & internal body function,
i.e. over-eating & under-exercising.

Diagnosed by measurement of height & weight, waist-hip ratio & skinfold thickness.

Body Mass Index (BMI) = Weight (kg) / [ Height (m) x Height (m) ]

BMI above 23 is considered overweight.

Features

Excessive distribution of fat tissue: males~ abdomen; females~ thighs & buttocks.

Complications

Predisposes or aggravates other health conditions, e.g. cardiovascular disorders, diabetes mellitus, digestive disorders, chronic bronchitis, gall bladder disease & osteoarthritis.

Higher risk if major surgery is necessary.

Underwriting requirement

Medical Examination

Tentative Decision

Standard rates if BMI is less than 30 and without other adverse risk factors e.g. smoking; family history of heart related conditions etc.

For BMI greater than 30, actual rating depends on the degree of severity and whether there are any adverse risk factors.
